June 8, 2009: State RR Championships…day two
SUNDAY ELITE CHAMPIONSHIP RACE, WOMEN’S 3/4s
Sunday was a little warmer, but still nice. No rain and everybody had clean bikes! Thanks Chad! The team was Raegan racing for the Cat 4 jersey and Carole, Cindy, and Angela in the Cat 3s. Rae’s adrenalin had worn off and the full extent of injuries were making themselves known. We missed you, but want you to recover! Most of the racers had not raced Masters the day before, so it was going to be interesting. A huge “Thank You!” to Carole, who sacrificed herself on the road leading up to the hill to throw down some great pacemaking. It was greatly appreciated by the team as well as everybody else in the peloton – it felt so great to go fast! Raegan had fun thwarting people’s efforts to steal her wheel, and kept good position in the strong field. Once on the hill, it was gangbusters with Cindy making a break with Abigail Lufkin (NOW-MS) and Lisa Campbell (Fast Friday). The peloton shattered due to the pace up the hill. Angela was just off the breakaway with several Cat 3s and a couple of Cat 4s. Angela and one of the Cat 4s (a Fast Friday racer) had teammates up the road and so got a free ride up the rest of the hill. Cindy came unhitched from the breakaway on the descent and unfortunately was not able to get on when the chase group led by Keely Brooks (Colavita) screamed by at Mach 1. After that it was all about chasing down the two racers up the road, with Keely and Angela doing all of the work and the Fast Friday girl trying to block their efforts. After we tracked down the two leaders, the rest of the race was spent keeping the pace high so that we wouldn’t get caught from behind. In the end it was Keely winning the Bear jersey and Angela taking 4th in the Cat 3s. Cindy was in the chase group just behind and wound up taking 6th place. So the team brought home a couple of top four finishes and a couple of top ten finishes for the two days of racing!
